Late nights

The Labour Day long weekend has come and gone yet the temperatures in Calgary are staying in the mid to high 20s - a lot of people are complaining that it's still too hot to sleep until late in the evening.  As I'm more of a night owl I've never really minded staying up a bit later, especially since I like the opportunity to go out for a late night treat!  Many places cater to those with a sweet tooth, but there are a lot of great places to satisfy any savoury cravings too.  Check out my favourite late night haunts below: 

The Sweet 

• Made by Marcus (open til 11pm everyday): I love their unusual and ever-changing ice cream flavours but I definitely suggest trying out their sundaes!  Late nights are a great way to avoid the insane line-ups they get during the day when the temperatures soar.  
• Village Ice Cream: (open til 11pm in the summer): This is the kind of place where I can go in and get "the usual" - I'm a cardamom or earl grey ice cream girl pretty much all the time.  They've got three locations in town now, so it's really easy to pop by.  
• Hot Point Fusion Cafe (open til 12am Sun-Thu, 2am Fri-Sat): If you've got a late night craving for bubble tea, milk tea, shaved ice, or smoothies, this Taiwanese place on MacLeod is a good bet.  They also serve late night snacks like egg puffs and other Taiwanese street food.  

The Savoury (& Sips)

• Great Taste Chinese (open til 10pm Sun-Thu, 11pm Fri-Sat): I always get the Shanghai soup dumplings (xiao long bao) - pretty much the first thing you see on their extensive menu!  Be aware that many items on their menu are more family-sized servings than snacks though, so be prepared to take home your leftovers if you're there in a small group.  
• U & Me (open til 4am): This the place I like to go for late night dim sum, though like Great Taste it's better to go with a large group of friends due to the portion sizes.  While I was still a uni student this was the start of a "Midnight Dim Sum Club" after late night classes or study sessions!  
• Annex Ale Project (open til 10pm Thu, 11pm Fri-Sat): If you're in the mood for a local beer in a more relaxed setting than a bar, Annex Ales is a good place to go.  They also make my favourite root beer and serve Monogram coffee if you're looking for a non-alcoholic option, plus they have a small snack menu available at their tap room.
