Sun's Out
Spring seems to have finally arrived here in Calgary and everyone's out enjoying the sunshine - so don't forget your sunscreen! While it's good to protect your skin from sun damage, chemical sunscreens can be harmful for your body and the environment so using a mineral sunscreen is best. Not all natural sunscreens work the same way however, so below is a breakdown of a few of my favourite affordable facial sunscreens.
Andalou Naturals Argan Stem Cell Benefit Balm SPF 30: "Patio Life Sunscreen"
- easily applied, non-greasy, no white cast
- can be worn under makeup
- noticeable natural citrus scent
- good for combination or oily skin (Andalou Naturals makes different BB creams for different skin types, so check out the one more suited for you)
- rubs off and/or sweats off easily - not for heavy physical activity or swimming
- can be packed in carry on when traveling
Goddess Garden Organics Facial Natural Sunscreen SPF 30: "Outdoor Life Sunscreen"
- needs to be rubbed in thoroughly, non-greasy, no white cast
- slightly shiny, tacky finish, but excellent as a makeup primer
- noticeable natural scent of immortelle flowers
- good for all skin types
- excellent durability while sweating and/or swimming
- can be packed in carry on when traveling
DeVita Solar Protective Moisturizer Mineral Sunscreen SPF 30: "Week to Weekend Sunscreen"
- easily applied, non-greasy, no white cast
- can be worn under makeup
- no noticeable scent
- good for all skin types
- moderately lasting while sweating but not swimming
- can be packed in carry on when traveling
I own and use all three sunscreens regularly. I tend to use Andalou Naturals when I'm going makeup free around town since it keeps my T-zone from getting shiny. If I'm going to an event in hot weather and/or humidity I use Goddess Garden as my primer, but for everyday makeup I'm more likely to use DeVita underneath. I take Goddess Garden skiing, camping, hiking, swimming, and surfing - anything that involves being outdoors for a long period or in the water.
