Things We Love Thursday: ag silver boutique

Contributed by Emma Callin

I first became familiar with ag silver boutique (the lack of capitalization always reminds me of e. e. cummings!) when it was on the top floor of our building, the Alberta Block. After the top floor was converted into office space, José-Luis Castillo moved his store into a small space tucked away in The Core, surrounded with glass windows patterned with designs imitating dragonfly wings.

I have always loved silver work that is a little bit… different. ag silver definitely fits that bill, and not just because of the way the store name is written! From the simple to the elaborate, every piece always has a wonderful whimsical quality – something I attribute to the artisans leaving a trace of themselves in their work.

We caught up with José-Luis to view his collections and discuss a little more about his family business!

What products and services do you provide?
“At ag silver boutique we design and manufacture contemporary silver jewellery, all made in 100% Mexican sterling silver with the highest standards in both materials and crafting. We also make custom work (silver and/or gold) and provide service and maintenance for jewellery as well as repairs.”

What do you love the most about what you do?
“I love everything about my business! We are originally from a small town in south-central Mexico in the State of Guerrero, where people have traditionally been working with silver for generations.”
Silver with rosewood.

Who makes the designs?
“At ag silver boutique I try to gather representative collections from my generation, thoughtfully made in a more modern fashion. Most of the designs are made by members of my family with some by a couple of friends.”
An assortment of natural stones in a stunning silver statement ring.

“I feel very proud to represent a group of Mexican designers and silversmiths and love the creative process whether it is working on a custom piece or design or acting as the curator for a new collection.”
