Fresh face

Contributed by Nicky Speer & Emma Callin

I often get asked how I do my makeup and the simple answer is: I don't.  Well, I do use tinted sunscreen, concealer and a little blush most days, but usually I leave my makeup to the professionals - Nicky from WorldTown Cosmetics!  I've learned a lot from her about what works for my skin tone, face shape, and makeup routine (i.e. as simple and quick as possible) and I would strongly recommend going in for a personalized makeup tutorial if you're like me and rather clueless on the subject.

In the meantime, here's an easy tutorial from Nicky on how she creates my "daytime look" for the blog:

  • Prime the face using either hands or foundation brush; here we used Fitglow BB2.

  • Apply colour correction as needed, in this case the under eye area using Fitglow Eye Bright.  This can be applied using either your fingers or a concealer brush.

  • For foundation we used Fitglow's Vita Active Foundation in VF3 with a large finishing brush for sheer coverage and an airbrushed finish.

  • If needed, conceal under eye and/or any blemishes.  We used Fitglow Conceal +2.

  • Set with a translucent powder.  How much you use depends on your skin type: drier skin will require much less than oily skin.
  • Highlight top of cheekbone, above brows and the centre of the face (nose ridge, cupid's bow, round of chin).  We used Party Monster by Concrete Minerals.

  • Lightly apply blush on the apples of the cheeks, blending slightly upwards towards the outside of the face.  We used Sweet Catrina by Concrete Minerals.

  • Apply eyeshadow primer.  Here we lightly blended Concrete Minterals Electric Eye Primer over the entire surface of the eyelid.

  • Using a large eye shadow brush, apply a wash of Concrete Minerals' Sweet Catrina over the lid, blending up over the crease of the eyelid.

  • Using a bullet brush, pack Concrete Minerals' Hustle in the outer corner, pulling colour up and inwards on the crease.
  • Use a fluffy blending brush to soften the edges.

  • Using a smokey liner brush (or a small bullet brush) on the lower lash line, blend Hustle from the outer corner inwards.
  • Highlight with Party Monster on the inside corner of the eye, pulling colour along the inner half of the lower lash line.
  • Highlight the brow bone below the arch of the eyebrow.

  • Using a push liner brush, apply a dark brown or black eye shadow along the upper lash line as a soft liner; we used Concrete Minerals' Jet.  We also applied liner on the outer third of the lower lash line - applying liner all along the lower lash line to the inner corner can make eyes appear smaller.
  • Some eye shapes are more prone to fall out than others.  You can use a fan brush or a q-tip to lightly remove this, or you can do your eyes before your complexion.

  • Apply mascara on upper and lower lashes.  We used Fitglow Good Lash mascara.

  • Fill in brows using a stiff angled brush and loose matte eye shadow.  We used Concrete Minerals' Disturbia.  Use light strokes and work towards the tail of the brow.
  • Comb eyebrows up and out with a spooly brush for a soft look.

  •  Apply a light nude shade on lips.  We used Fitglow Good Gloss in Nudie.

Stay tuned for a follow-up post on how Nicky builds on this look for evenings or events!
