Retrospective: 2017 Fashion Resolution

Back in January 2017 I decided to see if I could go the entire year without buying any clothing, footwear, or accessories - I did not succeed!  While I was initially disappointed in my lack of self-discipline, in retrospect it really taught me a few lessons in not only why I shop but also how.  Despite the fact that I've been keeping a curated closet for several years now this experiment showed me how much I can still learn about my own shopping habits.

What first caused me to go shopping again last year was the need to replace items that had worn out or were broken beyond repair, footwear in particular.  This made me realize that I hadn't been as careful as I could've been when I first purchased them - checking for things like a non-slip sole, reinforced seams (particularly in sport and outdoor footwear), and avoiding materials that don't hold up to Calgary's ice, snow, and inevitable salt and slush (like suede).  While I'm already in the habit of waiting a few weeks before a purchase to ensure I really want it, I should've also spent more time doing research on the item since I want it to last.  With access to the internet virtually everywhere, finding that information would take me less than five minutes.

I also realized that I still shop like I did when I was a student - I always have a good idea of what I'm looking for and I always check out a few different items that fit, but I usually choose based on lowest price and not how closely the item matches my criteria (even though I can now afford the more expensive item).  This means that I was buying items that I wasn't entirely happy with and consequently I would still feel the urge to go shopping!  Changing this habit has actually helped me shop less.  Investing in a fully-lined wool sweater (pictured), for example, is warmer and washes and wears better than the cheaper synthetic option, and since it's exactly what I wanted I don't bother looking for alternatives.

While I certainly did go shopping in 2017 I can definitely say that trying not to has helped improve and limit my shopping habits going forward!
