Laundry Day

Studio Intent has always been a supporter of clothing companies that use non-toxic dyes, vegetable-tanning, and/or fabrics grown organically or produced from less water-intensive crops - not just because it is better for the environment but healthier for the wearer as well.  It makes sense that we also care about how non-toxic the detergents we use to clean our clothes are.  While there is a wide selection of non-toxic laundry products readily available, the information on where to find them isn't.  See below for our favourites and where you can buy them!

If you're looking for laundry detergent there are several different brands that all do a great job at cleaning clothes while maintaining the colour and resilience of the fabric.  In Calgary you can shop at Fresh Laundry (old store location pictured - new location opening at The Uncommons), which carries Tangent GC and Common Good detergent, with refills available in store to cut down on waste.  Also in the Inglewood neighbourhood is Outside the Shape, which carries Unwrapped Life's laundry detergent and their zero-waste refill bar.  You can also find Eucalan, Nellie's, and Eco-Max at several specialty shops and many major grocery chains across Canada and the United States.

In general for delicate items and fabrics I use Common Good or Eucalan, for everything else I use Nellie's or Eco-Max (I like the bergamot/orange versions best).  If you're a big denim fan, Tangent GC makes a specialty denim wash as well.  And if you're looking for a great stain remover, Rocky Mountain Soap makes one that can also be grated to make laundry detergent for sensitive skin.

Tangent GC, Common Good, Unwrapped Life, and Eco-Max also make all-purpose non-toxic cleaning products as well.
